india shining
“India shining” a perfect term coined by the political leaders to magnify India’s image on the global scenario and to lure the youth into believing that India is actually moving towards being a developed nation. India shining was part of the BJP’s election manifesto which failed miserably bringing the Congress party into power.

With the congress providing a stable government in India and the next elections not very far away the BJP has shed its religious image and welcomed the term “Secular India Shining”. It seems that the harbingers of communal unrest in India appear to have realised that they can no more exploit religious fault lines for their political profit. It seems ironical that ideologies like Hindutva and Ram Mandir and Rath Yatra will no longer exist to entertain the political critics and India will from now onwards move towards true secularism which was the vision of the our forefathers who selflessly toiled towards the progress of the country.

While we look at the political picture that brought India shining into existence, the question still remains whether India is really shining.

Here lies the contradiction when we see that traditional values are stringent and welcoming the modern values are a tough task.

While the IT industry is witnessing growth with a rapid pace, the roads which lead to them still have ample potholes. The high rises are getting higher and the slums are getting bigger where people continue to live in unhygienic conditions in clustered rooms and no basic sanitation facilities. The level of education has increased along with the unemployment rate and the future of the country is armed with higher degrees and frustration.

Multinational companies find India as a green pasture where there is no dearth of talent that can be acquired at cheap rates. Outsourcing is the new slogan for all job aspirants who are willing to work for a 17 hour shift for the BPOs.

Women have been provided equality of status in every sphere, they are employed and independent yet evils like dowry and female infanticide are very much a reality.

The Sarwa Sikha Abhiyan fervently spreads in all parts of India, yet children can be found working in shabby conditions as domestic helps and daily wagers in all parts of the country, human trafficking of children and little girls.

Although the new budget brings for all the farmers a welcoming relief in the forms exemption on loans, Rs 60,000-crore relief package along with complete waiver for small scale farmers, they continue to commit suicide with the agricultural sector in India suffering continuously .

These are very few examples that can make anyone ponder whether India is really shining, the contradictions are found everywhere. India will really shine only if these contradictions are eradicated which can only be possible if the pace of growth continues to be steady as the way it is. The next decade will see INDIA SHINING with glory.

A lot of opportunities are taking a u turn to India and it has become quite the outsourced capital of the world with fields like medicine coming into the picture! But i am sure that it has a long way to go before it can be adjudhed shining. Loopholes at bureaucratic levels have to be mended and social issues really need to be address head-on.

India is in the process of creating a character of an industrialized country.

But in order to be more strengthened, the country should acknowledge the power of women in taking part to succeed in all its endeavors.

Shining with glory starts from respecting every citizen’s role to the overall objectives of the nation.

Great post.

India may have developed for a handful few, but still majority is away from that light. And before that could happen a lot also needs to be done. Our education system has almost crumbled and without that ‘India Shinning ‘ will always remain to a political slogan which can be exploited. The values which have helped India as a society are getting lost and more fanaticism is finding its way in place of tolerance.

Billions of Indians still go through daily struggle for two square of meals; still hordes of children are forced into child labour; even today billions of Indians don’t have access to safe sanitation; even today more than 30 per cent of people are illiterate. The rift between rich and poor is widening. That’s not what shining of a nation means? Does it?

You have written that secularism was the vision of our forefathers. But I beg to differ. If they wanted a truely secular country then they would have implemented the uniform civil code, instead of having different personal law codes for different religious communities. India never knew about the ideals of a democratic institution until the British introduced local self governments.India has always retained its feudal structure. The discriminatory social structure of the country has created oasis of plenty- where India shines.

Five to six years back, common Indians refused the slogan of 'India Shining' when the BJP-led government had tried it to use in general elections to receive votes. But Now, India is really shining and we people in Britain is facing the heat of India's development, particularly in steel sector.

Who says India is shining, I just read an article on Asma Jahangir's statement in which she said that India is always on danger of communal riots. Minorities are not safe in Indian states, Muslims are living life in fear in state of Gujarat. Which India are you talking about?

If India is shinning why so many Indians leave their own country to earn dollars and spent their lives alone in United States, Britain, Australia and in many other countries? Its is possible that you may find a group of Indians in almost all major cities across the world. Why do they leave their own 'Shining India'.

A culture of getting things free thanks to Nehru’s socialist model has made people lazy and want everything to be handed down to them from the government. Privatisation is the key to progress, but privatisation without accountability is what has actually halted India’s progress. Private companies, multinationals, IT giants want everything and get it because they have the power of money and education.
For example Bangalore city has 15 percent people employed in IT sectors (richest class) and the remaining 85 percent are suffering through existence because of this 15 percent.
When Tatas started industries they built cities from scratch and gave jobs to the local villagers in their factories and mines. But when Infosys wants to build a 5-star hotel in their campus, poor villagers lands are snatched and they are displaced to join the millions in urban slums.
This irresponsible and mindless exploitation of poor and voiceless should stop and everyone should get an equal opportunity to grow and rise. Only then will the country progress.

Whoever says India is not safe for Minorities is stupid. India is definitely safer for Muslims than Pakistan is for Hindus. The population of Muslims in India has increased manifold while the population of Hindus in Pakistan and Bangladesh has reduced in the past 3-4 decades. Pakistanis should look at themselves before pointing fingers at others.

Indians leave their shining India to get back the wealth and prosperity by legal means by working hard. The wealth that was illegally plundered by the Muslims and Christians for 1200 years in the past.
The white men lived in the dark ages as barbarians before renaissance and after they have lived a life of ruthless, smooth and suave swindlers cheating, murdering and plundering the populations of Asia, Australia (Aborigines), America (Indians) and Africa.

Ofcourse, i agree that a lot needs to be done in various sectors before we can proudly proclaim that our India is really at the cusp of becoming a developed country. Poverty, religious fundamentalism, etc etc etc and the list goes on. But, for those who want to really grab the existing opportunity and succeed in life to improve their standards of living, there is always a chance in the India of today. Being from Bangalore, i myself have seen guys with absolutely nothing becoming something. There was this guy called Pradeep, a Bangalorean by birth originally from Haryana. His dad was a factory worker earning about 5 thousand rupees a month. Pradeep, though good in studies till the tenth, lost his way and squandered his 11th and 12th, PUC, as we call it in Karnataka. Pradeep still couldn’t talk acceptable english though he had studied upto 1st PUC. Kicked out of college, he took up a job verifying credit cards, and he used to make three thousand rupees a month walking miles, office after office, everyday. Step by step, job after job, he finally ended up at a TATA Indecomm call center after a year. Three years down the line, Pradeep is a top performer at Aviva’s BPO earning 32 thousand rupees and owns a car and has a happy life though he says work is a little tough and can get monotonous. This is from a guy who had zero backing and had to build up his life from scratch without what everybody say urban kids have, English and communication skills. Pradeep is not able to climb up the corporate ladder because he does not have a degree, due to which he is still an customer care agent, though a very good one at that. What i am trying to emphasise here is if people want to make it big in India, there are opportunities like never before. It is just upto us to go and grab them and brush aside India becoming developed. If we, as individuals grow and improve our lives, India automatically will follow suit.

i have simply brought out the contradictions that are part of the indian structure. our forefathers did have secular India in mind but if we look at the political scenario, we will find that the seeds of communalism was sowed by the Britishers who divided the country for the hindus and muslims.we are still trying to cut the roots of the plant that has now deeply penetrated its roots into every little section of the society. our forefathers were secular in nature cited from the fact that hindus and muslims irrespective of faith fought for the freedom of india.
by defining separate personal laws, they wanted every religion to feel secure in the country given the contradictory values each of them has.
